What is ultrasonic technology?

Ultrasonics is the science of sound waves above the limits of human audibility in the range of 18 kHz. The most commonly used frequencies for industrial cleaning are those between 20 kHz and 150kHz. For the most of the cleaning applications a frequency which lies between 20 kHz and 50 kHz will be sufficient. Higher frequencies are particularly used for precision cleaning and/or if it concerns the cleaning of very delicate components. Ultrasonic energy ensures a cleaning deep in the pores, without scratching, brushing or scraping.

Principle

Ultrasonic cleaning has been based on the reproduction of sound by a conductive medium. In compressible media, such as air and the most of fixed substances, a sound wave is transferred ongoing. At not-compressible media, such as water, there is however only ongoing transfer of sound waves if the amplitude (sound pressure) is relatively low.

If the amplitude increases, arise there negative pressure in the areas of distribution which the fluid break, as a result of which arises there hydrogen bubbles. This phenomenon is also called cavitation.  Arrives the cavitation bubble in the  compression of a sound wave, then these start to tremble under the influence of the positive pressure. The bubble will grow to an unstable dimension. The bubble shall implode in the second phase and that results in cavitation. The collapse and implosion of myriad cavitation bubbles throughout an ultrasonically activated liquid result in the effect commonly associated with ultrasonics. 

Optimizing the ultrasonic cleaning process

The effectiveness of the ultrasonic cleaning process depends on a number of process parameters. This is beside the choice of frequency among other things time, temperature and cleaning fluid.
